Getting started

The event display is activated by the SNOMAN subroutine EVVIEW once the software unit VIW is selected, see 3.3. The package starts by asking the user to input a default window size. For most SNO institutions, CERNLIB is installed with the X11 environment and the window size is controlled by settings in an editable ASCII file called HIGZ_WINDOWS.DAT or higz_windows.dat, located either in the user's local or root directory. (This file is automatically created by HIGZ if none already exists). A typical HIGZ_WINDOWS.DAT file looks like :

	0 0 600 600
	0 0 600 600
	0 0 600 600
	0 0 600 600
	0 0 600 600
	0 0 600 600
	0 0 600 600
	0 0 600 600
	0 0 600 600
	0 0 600 600
which are just 10 lines of (xlow, ylow, xhigh, yhigh) numbers defining the window location and size in screen pixels. In the X11 environment, it is only necessary to press RETURN in answer to the question about workstation type.

Once activated, the display screen comprises of:-

  1. A square-shaped main event display window that is shown automatically

  2. One or more event windows used to display 2-dimensional projections of the hits in the detector. These window as well as the way in which the event is displayed are controlled by option switches in the main display window.

  3. Several histogramming and information windows that are opened or closed by the option switches in the main display window. (These option buttons, even though grouped into a menu-like appearance, should be considered as quick-access tool-bars only. The actual control menus will be implemented through the KUIP interface.)
For the time being, only one event information window and two windows for histograms are implemented. More will be added in the future.
